What our customers say

Why choose Central FS for Alness fire alarm installation?

We’re a fire, security and electrical contractor, so one skilled team can install your alarms, manage the wiring, handle your fuse board, or complete a fire risk assessment when required.

Choose mains wired work that is important, with your alarms connected directly to the electrical system and fitted correctly from the outset!

Central FS engineers carrying out fire safety work

Defective electrical appliances and wiring lead to numerous home electrical fires. Our complete electrical service addresses the underlying problem, as well as installing the alarm.

As a BAFE accredited company, our fire safety services are subject to independent reviews, and our assistance remains available after the alarms are installed.

We handle installation and ongoing care, show you how to test and silence the alarms, and address false alarms or chirping instead of expecting you to manage them alone.

Interlinked commercial fire alarm systems Alness

Companies have distinct responsibilities. If you run commercial premises, you require a fire alarm system suitable for the building and its risks, normally determined through a fire risk assessment.

Fire Alarm Installation Alness

We design, fit and maintain commercial fire detection systems throughout Alness and Scotland, covering sites from one shop to complex multiple zone premises.

Within each building, the arrangement may be a conventional panel serving a smaller unit, or an addressable system in a larger one, identifying the precise detector that has responded. Yet the principle remains unchanged. It is a single interlinked fire alarm, wired so that any trigger sounds the alarm across the building.

Wireless choices are ideal for listed buildings and properties where cable cannot be installed. Whatever goes in, we commission it, certify it and connect it to monitoring, ensuring an alarm receives a response day or night!

Domestic Fire Alarm Installation Alness

Since February 2022, Scottish law has stipulated every home to have interlinked smoke and heat alarms, while businesses must fit and maintain a operational fire alarm system.

The majority of fatalities in house fires happen when alarms are absent, have flat batteries, or are unconnected, stopping a downstairs alarm from waking those upstairs.

Interlinked alarms offer the answer, offering the easiest way to safeguard your home. The moment one alarm sounds, every alarm responds, wherever you may be within the building.

Scotland Fire Alarm Legislation – What Alness Homeowners Need to Know

Scotland’s smoke alarm legislation has changed. From 1 February 2022, the Housing (Scotland) Act requires each home to meet the same requirements, whether it is owner occupied or rented out.

In the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower fire, Scotland tightened its fire safety regulations, which now cover every Scottish home. Homes with older unlinked battery alarms do not meet compliance requirements.

To satisfy the new Scottish legislation, your property must satisfy the following criteria.

  • A fire alarm in the living room or the room you use most frequently
  • a smoke alarm in every corridor and landing
  • a heat alarm in the kitchen
  • Every smoke alarms and heat detectors linked, so they go off simultaneously.

A CO alarm in any room with a heating appliance, open fire, heater, or chimney flue.

Smoke and heat alarms are required to be mounted on the ceiling and powered via mains wiring or by a sealed, tamper proof, long life battery.

Carbon monoxide alarms are necessary wherever a carbon fuelled appliance is present, although they need not be interlinked with other alarms. It is the responsibility of the homeowner, or with the landlord where the property is rented.

Interlinked alarm systems for Alness properties

Throughout Alness, we fit compliant smoke, heat and carbon monoxide alarms, often completing the whole job in one visit. You do not need to purchase the alarms or determine where they belong.

We fit the right alarms, fit them in suitable locations, and link them so your home meets the Scottish standard.

Where to install your fire alarm

Getting their locations correctly is important just as much as the alarms themselves. Place smoke alarms on the ceiling in the living room and throughout every hallway and landing. Fit a heat alarm in the kitchen, where cooking fumes could trigger a smoke alarm, and place a carbon monoxide detector beside any carbon fuelled appliance.

We position each detector in line with the manufacturer’s spacing requirements and Scottish guidance, providing adequate coverage without nuisance false alarms.

Are mains-wired or long-life battery fire alarms better for Alness properties?

Scottish rules allow either option, and we fit whichever best suits your property. Mains wired alarms run from your electrics with battery backup, making them ideal for larger properties or a full rewire.

Long life battery alarms are wireless, interlinked smoke alarms with a sealed ten year cell that communicates by radio, allowing swift installation without cabling or redecoration. If you are not sure which option would suit you, we will help you decide when providing your quote.

Carbon monoxide alarms Alness

Carbon monoxide poses a separate hazard from fire and as a result needs a dedicated detector. Where a boiler, gas fire, wood burner or any other carbon fuelled appliance is fitted, a carbon monoxide alarm, also known as a CO alarm, is necessary within that room.

In contrast to smoke and heat alarms, CO alarms and carbon monoxide detectors do not need to be interlinked. However, they must be installed so that the home remains compliant.

We fit them beside your alarms, offering adequate carbon monoxide protection during the same visit.

Fire Alarm Servicing Alness

An alarm can keep safe you only while it is operational, so regular testing and occasional servicing really count! At home, we will demonstrate to you how to test your alarms and explain what those different beeps indicate. For a commercial fire alarm system, regular servicing is essential for keeping the building compliant and your insurance valid.

Most false alarms are caused by dust, older units, or detectors installed in the wrong location. It is best to attend to them without delay, since an alarm that repeatedly sounds without reason can eventually be disconnected. We maintain systems we have installed and those we have not, so if your current setup keeps triggering or a smoke alarm will not reset, we can determine the cause and resolve it.

Fire alarm installation Alness FAQ

How much does fire alarm installation cost?

It depends on the number of alarms needed and if they use mains wiring or long life batteries.

A standard interlinked home setup is a fast, fixed-fee job, whereas a commercial fire alarm system is costed based on the building. We provide a free quotation prior to work starting, so ring 0141 530 1244 for a quote.

Do smoke alarms need to be hardwired in Alness?

No. The Scottish rules allow either mains wired alarms or sealed, tamper proof long life battery alarms, as long as they are interlinked and properly sited.

Radio linked battery alarms are widely selected as they meet the required standard without requiring any rewiring.

Do I need an electrician to fit a smoke alarm in Alness?

For a sealed long life battery alarm, no, although correct siting and interlinking are common areas of error, having them fitted by a professional is worth considering.

Mains wired alarms require a qualified electrician, as they connect directly to your electrical distribution board. We take care of both!

Fire and Security Installation Scotland

Will the fire brigade install fire alarms?

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service delivers free home fire safety visits and guidance, while these are not equivalent to the complete interlinked system now mandated by law.

This needs a qualified installer. We install compliant smoke, heat and carbon monoxide alarms across Alness and Scotland.

Why does my smoke alarm keep going off?

An infrequent chirp frequently indicates a low battery. With a sealed unit, it may indicate that the alarm has reached the end of its ten year life and needs replacing. Dust can also be a cause, as can placing the alarm too close to a kitchen or bathroom.

If changing the battery fails to resolve the issue, the unit itself may need replacing, and we can replace it on the same visit.

How long do smoke alarms last?

The majority of smoke alarms need replacing approximately every ten years, while sealed long life battery units are designed to operate for around a decade before the entire alarm needs replacing.

Continual chirping from a smoke alarm usually indicates that its battery is depleted or that the unit needs to be replaced.
